Market researchers from IHS iSuppli obtained a sample of the new CDMA iPhone 4 sold through Verizon and discovered that the device is not just a CDMA conversion. It feature several changes that hint to modifications the UMTS/GSM version will receive as well.
Most notably the CDMA iPhone has a modified antenna design: The device has a dual-antenna (the original device had a single antenna) to improve signal reception. Early reviews that indicate that the reception quality of the device has improved and the number of dropped calls has been reduced could very well be an effect of the new antenna design (in addition to possible network advantages). Apple faced criticism last year over reception issues of the fancy iPhone 4 antenna.
IHS iSuppli als found an integrated GPS chip in the CDMA iPhone 4, as opposed to the discrete GPS chip in the UMTS/GSM device. The market researchers identified the new Qualcomm MDM6600, which carries the GPS feature, as an entry-level GPS solution that is typically used for embedded wireless modules. The change reduces device complexity for Apple – as well as the production cost of the iPhone 4.
Both changes are likely to come to the AT&T iPhone 4 as well in the form of an iPhone 4.5 update, possibly as soon as the white iPhone 4, which, apparently, will be available in the near future.
