SUPPLEMENTS low-dose melatonin may help children with autism to get a better night's sleep. Other advantages, this supplement does not cause side effects, so parents can continue to use all necessary.

This statement is based on the findings of researchers from the Sleep Disorders Center at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. 11 children aged 4-10 with autism fall asleep faster with a longer sleep duration when given low doses of melatonin supplements.

According to study leader Beth Malow, MD, the study was inspired by previous studies that have found that 70% of children with autism have trouble sleeping, and studies show that lack of melatonin (the body's natural sleep hormone) is a cause of sleep disorders. Melatonin, light malow, a hormone secreted at night by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin is believed to control the sleep cycle, which is often impaired in the elderly and children with autism.

Good sleep habits

In a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Neurological Association, the Malow and his team studied the effects of melatonin supplementation in 11 children with autism are still maintained at least 30 minutes a night, three nights a week, before falling asleep.

Parents are also asked to follow a program of education about good sleep habits. They are trained to ensure that their children maintain a bedtime routine, such as going to bed at the same time every night. And if the kids wake up at night, parents should guide them back to bed, do not let them sleep in between the father and mother.

Later, children given melatonin in liquid form (as many children with autism who have difficulty swallowing pills), half an hour before bed, every night. The dose is increased every 3 weeks until the children could sleep within 30 minutes after the hour of sleep at least 5 nights a week.

So far, bright Malow, 11 children have completed the first phase of the study which lasted for 4 months. After doing supplementation for 16 weeks, the average time they take to fall asleep decreased from 38 minutes to 22 minutes. Of the 11 children, bright Malow, 3 children can be managed with one milligram of melatonin a night, 6 takes 3 milligrams, and only two children who take 6 milligrams.

"They sleep longer, and parents report said he did not face much trouble to invite children to sleep," Malow said, as quoted by WebMD site. In addition, continued Malow, the children also showed fewer behavior at will commonly experienced by children with autism.
